Scanline VFX and Sony Pictures Imageworks used Ziva VFX to bring to life all of the gigantic, ferocious sharks (and prehistoric Megalodons) in the 2018 summer blockbuster, The Meg. Twenty years in the making, this movie finally hit the character quality and realism that they director had envisioned all along. We love seeing studios leverage our top tools, like the built-in anatomy warping scripts, to expedite their workflows and make great, big, terrifying characters come to life.

DNEG was able to use Ziva VFX for the gigantic Kaiju aliens in the 2018 release of Pacific Rim Uprising. Even though these evil, humanity-destroying aliens are rigid and reptilian, Ziva VFX's fat and skin solution made it possible to achieve lifelike volume preservation to make them look even more terrifying. Sony Picture Imageworks achieved outstanding digi-double effects for the Enchantress, played by Cara Delevingne, in the 2016 Suicide Squad film, using Ziva VFX! Check out this wicked breakdown and behind-the-scene shots from the film.

Mark Breakspear, VFX Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks: "[Ziva is] amazing software. It helped us animate Enchantress in a way that you look at her and you go, "Oh, why is she CG?" You get a bit closer and you go, "Oh, oh wow. Wait, how did that happen? How do you do? Wait, what machine…?" Visually, it's like, "Wait, how do you get tattoos inside a body?" That was a big achievement. I think visually that was a real payoff. It's one of those things where you know it's going to work, but you don't really see it until very close to the end. My fingernails have started growing back now, but they were pretty worn down for a while.

The Fantastic Beasts sequel (The Crimes of Grindelwald) is just leaving theatres, and although it was packed with stunning mythical creatures, our favourite will always be the mighty Graphorn from the original Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

“We were working on nailing those details right until the end of the show,” says Culpitt. “There’s so much complexity within each model and character; there’s subsurface work, there’s hair on top, there’s lots of skin dips and hard shell surfaces, as well as soft skin.
